Paul McCartney & Peaches Back Pussy Riot

Paul McCartney & Peaches Back Pussy Riot

It’s currently one of the most controversial debates in the world and for Russia it has garnered them more attention than wanted. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22; Maria Alyokhina, 24;  and 30-year-old Yekaterina Samutsevich of Russian band Pussy Riot are due for trial verdict for their anti-Putin performance at a Russian Orthodox Church this year.

Detained since March this year, the campaign for their release, which is worldwide now, has spiked in the past fortnight.

Last night ex-Beatles member, Paul McCartney, posted a letter on his site to remind the women to be strong and that he would support them no matter what.

“Dear Nadya, Katya and Masha,

I’m writing to show my support for you at this difficult time. I would like you to know that I very much hope the Russian authorities would support the principle of free speech for all their citizens and not feel that they have to punish you for your protest. Many people in the civilised world are allowed to voice their opinions … as long as they do not hurt anyone in doing so. I believe this is the best way forward for all societies.I hope you can stay strong and believe that I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom. Wishing you the very best of luck, Paul McCartney.”

A few weeks ago, Madonna painted ‘Free Pussy Riot’ across her torso at a Moscow concert, urging the crowd to free the band members. According to an ABC article, even president Vladimir Putin, whom Pussy Riot‘s performance was directed at, conceded that the women should not be judged “so harshly”.

Other musicians have flocked to the cause, including French-Candanian Peaches.

Having felt so strongly about the imprisonment of Nadya, Katya and Masha’s, the electro-pop musician rallied together a collection of artists to produce a video entitled Free Pussy Riot.

Lax in comparison to her other music — it’s a campaign video, what do you expect? — it features Lykke Li, The Hives, Peter Bjorn and John, Kate Nash and many more artists. Though it’s hard to tell with a plethora of people in the bright attire and balaclavas associated with Pussy Riot. Regardless, it’s nice to know that the world can rally together to support feminism and democracy.

Pussy Riot will receive their sentence today. If you wish to sign the petition, could do so here.

Shame on you Paul! You disgraced the whole world because of these whores! This is not the girl for a long time! They went against God! Stripped almost at the altar of the temple. They desecrated the temple. Pahabnye sang a word about the Virgin. Offended the religious sentiments of millions of faithful Christians. And you protect prostitutes, who starred in a pornographic video. Horrible man! No longer will listen to your songs and never telling everyone what you’re a bad person! Do not listen to people no songs of Paul. It supports the devil!
