After a 2012 event that will be remembered as the darkest chapter of Big Day Out‘s history, festival giant Big Day Out are back to celebrate their 21st birthday, and all efforts have been made to make up for last year’s shortfalls.

The 2013 line up has been delivered far earlier than is traditional, likely in order to capitalise on the feedback from partner festival Lollapalooza next month- as well as to get in early before the crowd-diverging line ups for Future Music Festival and Soundwave drop, the latter of which was seen as a benchmark which Big Day Out failed to live up to this year.

With the Red Hot Chili Peppers having confirmed themselves as headliners on Twitter earlier today, the rest of the line up was anyone’s guess (we went so far as to suggest Frank Ocean, Sleigh Bells, Kaskade and Childish Gambino). Fake posters have been rife, stacked with the likes of Major Lazer, Green Day, Plan B, Underworld, Placebo and Refused- but for which the others’ existence already worked against their legitimacy.

The 2013 event will also see the full festival returned to both Perth and Adelaide, after the 2012 run lost headliners and many acts, and suffered a deficit in crowds as a result. The 2013 show delivers equally to all cities again- a move welcomed by the non-East Coast contingent. No doubt with the new majority C3 ownership, we will see more surprises coming our way for the festival this year too.
